VAC UK hits the road at Tilbury

19th Oct 2022

VAC UK has been engaged to support the build of a new haul road for plant and equipment at Tilbury, Essex.

The work will make possible the construction of new access and relief roads into and around Tilbury and the Port which is seeing growing traffic volumes as the strategically important facility continues to develop.

Port of Tilbury London Ltd’s expansion was marked at the beginning of 2022 with the opening of Tilbury2 – a £250m investment by Forth Ports Group. Built on a 160-acre former power station site, Tilbury2 includes Tarmac’s construction materials terminal – a purpose-built, 2km long aggregates conveyor system and railhead which, at 775m, is capable of taking the longest freight trains. It allows construction materials to be delivered efficiently from vessel to the terminal for processing before moving onto building projects and public infrastructure schemes like HS2 (High Speed Two) Ltd without the use of heavy road haulage.

VAC UK Director Patrick Curran said: “As you would expect, the underground space is pretty heavily congested HV, LV, water, comms – the lot really – so vacuum excavation has been an indispensable tool to ensure safe progress.”
