VAC UK helping to restore Brighton landmark
27th Oct 2021
VAC UK has been appointed to locate and expose the foundations of the Victorian arches along Brighton’s seafront as part of a project to restore the iconic colonnade and promenade.
Madeira Terrace stretches almost 3000 feet along the face of the East Cliff in the South Coast town. The terrace is supported by cast-iron lattice-work archways and pillars and is listed as being of special architectural interest. By using vacuum excavation it is possible to expose the bases without causing any damage to the delicate ironwork.
The work is being carried out opposite a future South Coast landmark, Sea Lanes – the new National Open Water Swimming Centre which are set to open in Summer 2022.
