VAC UK Rhino vac ex power has been brought in to excavate several new connection pits and trenches in Swindon as part of a new road layout scheme in the town centre.

Working in light ground conditions, the LONGO EUROSERVICE S.R.L Rhino suction excavator was able to make short work of excavating the two 1.5m3 connection pits and  5 metre and  9 metre connection trenches.

The top-of-the-range vac ex model is based around the most powerful twin fan suction excavator on the market and includes premium features such as a vibrating skip which improves unloading and reduces the need for manual clearing.

This Rhino is built on a Scania XT chassis powered by the 13 litre 540hp Euro 6 compliant engine.

Sean Gallagher, General Manager of VAC UK, believes vacuum excavation is perfectly suited to this sort of urban digging where there are often congested underground services.

“The chances of a service strike are massively reduced, he said. “So with vac ex much of the potential for delays and additional costs is removed and you are working with a much safer alternative to conventional excavation for operatives.

The job helps to pave the way for a programme of development in the New Town area, close to the railway station.

Swindon Borough Council is spearheading a programme of more than £100m investment across the town centre to upgrade transport links, the public realm and heritage assets and to stimulate regeneration.

VAC UK’s work is at the eastern end of one of the most significant projects – the transformation of Fleming Way as the main gateway to the town centre.

The scheme will improve  connectivity between the train station and the town for both residents and visitors. Scheduled for completion in Autumn 2024 the improvements include:

The Fleming Way subway will be removed to make the road the same level as the town centre shopping area and The Parade.

Together, the works will create a safer, easier to understand route through the town centre.
